FAQs Digital Nomad Visa in Colombia

The Digital Nomad Visa can be issued for up to 2 years; however, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides the granting time: a maximum of two years, one year, or less. This visa allows foreigners to stay in Colombia for the total time that the visa has been granted.

To be eligible for a Colombian digital nomad visa, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Provide remote services for an international firm, be a socio-owner of a foreign company and work remotely for it, or start a digital entrepreneurship project in Colombia.
  • Your monthly income should be more than $975 monthly, which is 3 minimum wages in Colombia.
  • You must be a citizen of a country that doesn’t require a visa to enter Colombia, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, and others.

  • Yes. To apply for a digital nomad visa, you must demonstrate that you have a travel and medical assistance policy that covers all risks in case of accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, or repatriation in Colombia.
  • The travel and medical assistance policy should be valid for your stay in the country. Remember that the length of your visa may depend on the validity period of your international health policy.

  • After you complete your documents and submit the visa application online with the Colombian government, the normal waiting time is approximately 4 weeks, but this time can be variable.

  • No. The Colombian digital nomad visa does not allow you to work for Colombian companies..

  • Yes. If you are a digital nomad visa holder, you can obtain beneficiary visas for your economic dependents, either for your partner, children under 25, or older children if they have a physical or mental disability. Please note that visas for dependents have additional costs.

Acquiring a Colombia Digital Nomad Visa involves an application fee and a visa issuance fee.

Visa Application Fee or Study Fee: USD 55; you must pay this fee when you apply, and it is non-refundable. Visa Issuance Fee or Approval Fee: USD 178; you will only have to pay it if your visa is approved.

The value of the extra fees to receive help in your visa process will depend on the agency you choose. You can find agencies and lawyers in Colombia that charge from 220 USD to 1000 USD or even more for their services. Here at expatgroup.co, our digital nomad visa service costs just 220 USD.

  • In addition to the fees charged by the government and the agency you choose to process your visa, you should be aware of additional costs you may incur. These costs include expenses for authentication, apostille and legalization of documents, official translations if your documents are in a language other than Spanish, and the Migración Colombia rate to obtain a Cédula de Extranjería (approximately USD 55), which is the final step of the process
  • No. In Colombia, the visas that allow you to accumulate time to obtain permanent residence are type M (Migrant) visas. The digital nomad visa type V (visitor) does not accumulate time for residence
  • Paying taxes in Colombia does not depend on your visa type but on whether you are considered a tax resident by spending more than 183 days in the country.
  • For example, you would not be considered a tax resident if you have a digital nomad visa for one year but stay less than 183 days in the country. In this case, you only declare the income tax on national source income and wealth obtained in Colombia.
  • On the other hand, if, with the visa, you stay for more than 183 days in the country, you declare income tax for the national and foreign source income and patrimony possessed inside and outside the country.

Yes. You can apply for a new digital nomad visa. However, remember that approval will depend on the decision of the Colombian government based on its discretionary power.

Although the digital nomad visa is not usually denied as long as you meet all the criteria and carry out the process correctly, if your application is rejected and you are in Colombia, you will have up to 30 days to leave the country. You can only reapply for a new visa after 6 months from the denial.

Google Reviews

Expat group helped me every step of the way to obtain my visa. They were always available if I had any questions or concerns. Suad was there throughout the entire process and she was always very helpful. I highly recommend using this company to get a visa.

I am grateful for the support I received in getting my visa and other associated documents taken care of. The expatgroup team was very helpful, responsive, and dedicated.

Expatgroup has been our lifeline for Imigration, Visas, Property Purchases, Contract Review and general advice. The staff has experts in areas of Colombian law so that any work is done by someone with current and accurate knowledge. We looked at one and two person firms but know from experience that you cannot be an expert at everything and keep up with current laws and regulations. They are smart, friendly, transparent, reasonably priced, tolerant of our stupid questions and have made it easy to sleep at night. Expatgroup is really the best.

“My second time to use their outstanding services!
Because I was renewing my Digital Nomad Visa this time was even easier than when I originally obtained it last year. And that process was very easy too, because at Expat Group they are professionals and know what they are doing!
This time I worked with Juan, Zamantha, and Estefania. All were very professional and extremely responsive.
When it is time to renew or obtain a different type of visa I will use them again!
Highly recommend!”
